This project is for advanced students. Make sure you’ve completed the Police Siren project first!
This is a really cool one. You’re actually going to build a miniature radio station. You can broadcast your voice or music to a regular FM radio. It just has a very short range (about 100 feet, or 30 meters).
It’s just a bit more complicated than the siren, and it will need some “tuning” when you’re done with it. Take your time with this one and have fun.
To make this project, you’ll need the Wireless FM Transmitter kit, your soldering equipment, and basic tools (pliers, wire strippers, scissors, etc.)

You need solder from an electronics supply store. Home depot’s is probably too large because it’s more for larger projects. Find one in Jameco (www.jameco.com) that is 0.8 to 1.2 mm rosin core solder, or in the electronics section of a store (Home Depot may or may not have it, I am not sure). You cannot use acid core solder, plumber’s solder, or solid solder.
We need to order more solder wire, since we used all that was included with the kit. We apparently purchased the wrong kind from Home Depot, as it’s a tad thicker, or not as flexible to use. Do you have a link where we can order the same size wire that was included in the tube? Is it available only online, or can it be found in any local stores? Thanks!
ok, thanks
Excellent – great job! If it transmits any further, you’ll need an FCC license, so no… this is the one with the longest range that we found available, so hope this works out ok! 🙂
We got the transmitter to work good,is there any way to make it broadcast farther than it does?
We got the soldering iron in the mail and it works great! Thank you!
Hi Yvonne,
Thanks for letting us know. The top video played through til 78:47. When you refresh the page and move the slider forward, can you get it to go past the 46 minute mark? You may have to hit PLAY then PAUSE and wait a minute for the slider to work. Look at the image below where I’ve used the slider to go to 71:29…
The top video stops working after 46 ish minutes and my son needs to know how to tune the wireless FM transmitter. Thanks Yvonne
Electronics 2 in the Diamond and Gold program.
what bag is it in?
No – that’s not really used at all. It’s a way to remove solder you don’t want (like if you used too much). You want the spool of silver-looking wire.
Is the wire in the Diamond science mastery that says Desoldering Wire the solder?
