Think of your ears as ‘sound antennas’.  There’s a reason you have TWO of these – and that’s what this experiment is all about.  You can use any noise maker (an electronic timer with a high pitched beep works very well), a partner, a blindfold (not necessary but more fun if you have one handy), and earplugs (or use your fingers to close the little flap over your ear – don’t stick your fingers IN your ears!).

  1. Yes, that’s correct! Sound can’t travel in outer space because there’s no air for it to travel through.

Since sound is the vibration of particles. And since there is no sound in space; is that because there is no air particles to vibrate? Or is it for another reason?

i loved it and sometimes pointed in the wrong direction and it was soooooo much fun i did it with my brother and my mom soooo fun

  4. Neat idea! Did you know that Edison was mostly deaf as well? He would “listen” to his phonograph by clamping down on the wood base with his jaws and feeling the vibrations. When I visited his home on a tour the guide told me all about it.

Very interesting, especially since my husband is deaf in one ear. We put two people back to back. Watching them point to different directions was very funny. Most of us could not tell where the sound was coming from when it was above or directly in front. It was a good experiment to show the children how their Daddy hears..or doesn’t hear.

This is so fun! My dad is playing it with my brother right now and he’s getting it right. I played it with my brother and I was wrong a few times. My brother played with me and he got it right every time.
